"Mrs. Rachel Halliday Ward died of infirmities incident to old age at the home of her son, Daniel Ward, near Loon Lake, November 24, 1915, in her 97th year. She was born on Halliday Hill, February 26, 1819, and was the daughter of Sylvester and Hannah Halliday. She was married to Daniel C. Ward when about 28 years of age, at the farm home. She was the mother of two children, Mrs. Maria E. Cooley of this place, and Daniel Ward of Loon Lake. Her husband died in 1867. She had no living brothers or sisters. She leaves three grandchildren, Mrs. Sherman Bassler of Binghamton, Mrs. John Pritting of Cohocton, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ward of Loon Lake, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral was held November 27, at Loon Lake church, Rev. S.H. Beshgetour of Cohocton officiating. Interment in Lake View [Lakeside] cemetery at Loon Lake. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of this place, having joined by letter from the Presbyterian church at Brampton, Can., under the ministry of Rev. Austin.
With the exception of about seven years in Canada and four or five years in Cohocton, she had spent her whole life on the farm on Halliday Hill near Loon Lake. Mrs. Ward was a remarkable woman in many ways. She was a granddaughter of Amos Halliday, who came from Hartford, Conn., and settled on the farm on Halliday Hill where she was born. Amos Halliday lived to be 106 years old and is buried in the Lake View [Lakeside] cemetery at Loon Lake. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. He was present at the surrender of Burgoyne and of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.
She kept her faculties until about three months ago when her mind and body began to fail. Up until that time she was a great reader, knew what was going on at home and abroad, and could converse intelligently on live topics of the day. One topic with which she was particularly familiar was the relationship of the royal families of Europe, one to the other. The family recently had a photograph made showing five generations in one group.”
