In 1897, George received a scholarship to Delvin's Business College in Jackson, Michigan. He boarded away from home with the George E. Gates family while he attended school. Following his schooling, George lived with his father in Leslie and worked as a farmhand. In 1910, he was a sailor on the USS Patapsco with the US Navy. By 1917, George was living at Rock Island, Illinois, working as a machinist.
In 1920, he was back home in the Lansing area working as an engineer at an auto factory. He also married Clara M. Brown (Painter), a girl from Illinois, in 1920 in Lansing.
By 1925, George had moved on to a second marriage with Rosaly Fish of Wisconsin. They had a son in 1925, and the family resided in Wisconsin. In 1930, they lived in Phelps, WI, and George's occupation was listed as a machinist in auto factory. By 1942, George was retired and residing in Phelps, Wisconsin. He passed away there in 1957, the same year as his older brother, Henry.
