Having been outflanked by the enemy brigade at the Battle of Champion Hill, Brig. Gen Wirt Adam's Calvalry fell back across Baker's Creek under orders of General Stephen D. Lee, sending Major Bridges with two escort companies to hold the flank movement in check, action in which Bridges fell mortally wounded. Believed dead on the battlefield, but found alive, was carried to Adj. Gen Wharton's home in Jackson, where he lived for nine more days. Buried in Wharton's plot in the cemetery.
