Maurice E. “Gene” Lomax, 82 years, eight months and 15 days, of Opdyke, died 8:27 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1932, in Jefferson County, the son of George Henry and Pearl (Bryan) Lomax. He is survived by son, Kenneth Eugene Lomax and wife Boston of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Diane Herman of Pekin; two grandsons, Cannon Eugene Lomax and fiancee Sherri Warner of Opdyke and Lane Eugene Lomax of Woodlawn; three granddaughters, Lori Townzen of Pekin, Kari Harkleroad and husband Rob of Pekin and Stacy (Lomax) Cannon and husband Shane of Brighton, Colo.; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Albright and husband Bob of Opdyke; niece, Rachel Albright Phillips and husband Wesley of Bluford; and great-niece, Savannah Phillips of Bluford. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Edna Mae Lomax. He is survived by special companion of 26 years, Carla Mullinax of Opdyke and her family, Tommy Chizk and wife Barb of Greeley, Colo., Lisa Ritchey of Mt. Vernon, Brian Gibson and wife Jessica of Christopher, several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Molly Ritchey. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Gary Cline, the Rev. Wes Neil and the Rev. Ron Trout officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Gene was a member of Second General Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. He loved all animals, was a hobby farmer, an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed antiquing. He worked in construction and was an oil field worker and also an operating engineer out of Local 520 in Granite City. Mr. Lomax owned and operated Lomax Mobile Home Sales for several years. Mr. Lomax was the co-founder of Cannon Homes where he was currently employed. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
