Carson and Vercia Cox (Cleveland Bible College Class of 1914) left a business in Kansas and headed for Cleveland to prepare for Christian service. In 1919, they traveled to China where they served together until Carson's death in 1932.

Vercia, later, established the first Christian girls' school to be opened in the province of Kunming and wrote of her adventures in her book Plumes Over Kunming (1944). Vercia Cox died in February of 1946 aboard the American Liner, "Marine Jumper" returning to China from a furlough.
