WATERVILLE - John Edward Hilton, 74, born on April 15, 1941, died unexpectedly while enjoying a day with his family on Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2015. John grew up on the Hilton family farm in Athens, with his father and mother, Clarence N. and Abbie (Boynton) Hilton and brother James.

John was active in 4-H, and graduated from Somerset Academy in 1958 and Colby College in 1962. He later obtained a Master's degree in Administration from the University of Maine at Orono. He also attended the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Mich. John began teaching immediately following his college graduation.

John married his beloved wife, Karen E. Moody, of Cornville, on July 22, 1967, a year before her graduation from nursing school. John and Karen would have been married 48 years this year; the Lord blessed their marriage with a deep, tender love and abiding joy and many happy memories.

John remained in education for 25 years as both teacher and administrator. He taught and administered at Somerset Academy and taught at Hartland Academy and Nokomis Regional High. He especially enjoyed his 10 years of teaching in Christian schools in Colorado, Washington, and Minnesota. He followed this career with a second career as an agent of Northwestern Mutual, devoting himself to his clients with the same compassionate, thorough attention and dedication as he provided his students.

John was a devout Christian. One of his favorite songs best represented his love for his Heavenly Father: "In sweet communion, Lord, with Thee I constantly abide; my hand Thou holdest in Thy own, to keep me near Thy side."

John is survived by his loving wife, Karen M. Hilton, who will miss him dearly. He also is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Vigue (husband Bill) and her children John, Julia, Jocelyn, and Liam; daughter Heidi Hameed; daughter Joanna Hilton and her four children; his aunt Doris Fox Gallant; his parents-in-law, Myron and Emily Moody, Sr; brother-in-law, Myron Moody, Jr. (wife Patricia), sisters-in-law Susan Moody and Nora Linkletter; as well as many extended family members and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Abbie Hilton; and his brother Jim Hilton.

A private burial will be held at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens, next to his parents and grandparents. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home. (Central Maine 5/12/2015)
