Frazar Augustus Stearns was born in Cambridge, Mass., on June 21, 1840. He was a lieutenant in Co. I, 21st Regt. Mass. Vol. Inf. when he was killed in action. This engraving was from the frontispiece of his book, Adjutant Stearns (Boston: Mass. Sabbath School Soc., 1862), a small biography written by his father, the Pres. of Amherst College, partly to advance the Temperance movement in his memory.
