Joseph was the second child of John Kubat and Barbara Danes Kubat. He was born on March 9, 1879 and was baptized on March 16, 1879 at St Wenceslaus Church in Chicago. In the early 1900s he worked as a boxmaker, then for a publishing house, then as a stockman for Marshall Fields. He married Elizabeth Novotny on June 1, 1912 at Blessed Agnes of Bohemia Church (now St Agnes of Bohemia Church).

Note that the birth year on his gravemarker is incorrect. He was born in 1879, and baptized Jan Josef.

Kubat, beloved husband of Elizabeth, nee Novotny; dear father of Delphine (Joseph) Fitzgibbons, Mary, Eugene, and Marcella Kubat; grandfather of Patrick and Michael Fitzgibbons. Funeral Thursday, July 30, 8:45 a.m. from H. Marik Sons Chapel 2534 S. Pulaski road, to Epiphany church, for 9:30 mass. Interment Queen of Heaven. Kindly omit flowers. LA 1-3972.
