...........,FROM OUR LOCAL FUNERAL HOME

Dr. Derrick E. Griffith, 43, was a brilliant and passionate educator, scholar, father and extraordinary human being. He was the pillar of his family and an inspiration to many. Derrick saw potential in others when it was hard for them to see it in themselves. He committed his life to education, using it to overcome obstacles and encouraging all those he mentored to do the same. Derrick was a true visionary, whose compassion and intelligence were paralleled only by his sense of humor and love for his students, colleagues, friends and family.

Derrick was a tireless force in the world of education. He started as a social studies teacher in Rochester and later spent many years working behind the scenes in school reform and professional development for Classroom Inc. He was the Assistant Executive Director of Hudson Guild and an adjunct instructor at Hunter College. In 2003, The City University of New York hired him to create CUNY Prep; a program that enabled thousands of out-of-school youth to earn high school equivalency diplomas and enter college. As the founding Principal and Director of CUNY Prep, he transformed the educational landscape for out-of-school youth in New York City. He left CUNY Prep in 2010 to become the Executive Director of Groundwork Inc, a community-based organization in East New York. From there, he moved on to Medgar Evers College as Assistant Provost and most recently served as Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

Derrick earned a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; a bond he held dear throughout his life. He completed his Master’s in Teaching at the University of Rochester in 1995. The month before his death, Derrick defended his dissertation and earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Urban Education at The Graduate Center, The City University of New York. His degree will be presented posthumously to his family at commencement on May 27, 2015.

Derrick is survived by his mother Carlea Griffith, his son Darryus Griffith, and a host of family, friends, colleagues and students who will miss him dearly.
