Jim was one of eight victims killed when the Amtrak train they were passengers on derailed. He was raised at the Jersey Shore and has resided in Plainsboro for the past 15 years. He attended both Cornell University and New York University. He was currently employed with the Associated Press as a Video Software Architect for over 16 years where he won several technology awards. Jim was involved with the "Pit Crew" for the West Windsor-Plainsboro South Marching Band and was a member and supporter of the Chinmaya Mission/Vrindavan of Cranbury, New Jersey. He was a man of many interests who enjoyed needlepoint, woodworking, bike riding, and gardening. Jim was an integral part of the community of West Windsor-Plainsboro and could be found supporting every community service project or event. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Jacqueline M. (Reinbold) Gaines; his children, Oliver and Anushka; his parents, James M., II and Carolyn (Koehler) Gaines of Oregon; his brother, Christopher Gaines of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; and his sister, Denise Gaines of Portland, Oregon.
