James Strong Moffatt Pressly was named for his great-grandfather, grandfather of his mother, Mary Maude Moffatt; the wife of Dr. William Cornelius Pressly, his father. James Strong Moffatt was a leading citizen & businessman in Troy, Tennessee.

Jamie, as he was known by his family, was born on the 7th of March 1886. His home was filled with relations of all walks of like, business, ministers and doctors. He chose to follow in his father's footsteps and became a doctor.

Jamie Pressly attended a school in Troy and graduated from Erskine College, in Due West, South Carolina, in 1908. Then he graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, in Nashville, 1910.

In 1912, while practicing on the island of Puerto Rico, Dr. Jamie Pressly married Louise Roussel.
