He was baptized Sept 16,1604 at Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England, the son of William Coolidge and Margaret Mayse Coolidge of Cottenham.
Children: John Coolidge Jr, Nathaniel Coolidge, Simon Coolidge, Mary Coolidge Mixer(first wife of Isaac Mixer Jr), Stephen Coolidge, Obadiah Coolidge, and Jonathan Coolidge.

John Coolidge, Senior, a descendant of Thomas (Colynge) of Arrington, Eng., in 1495, and son of William Coolidge of Cottenham, was bapt. Sept. 16, 1604, and among the earliest settlers of Watertown. His wife Mary died Aug. 22, 1691. Dr. Bond enumerates eight children, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Stephen (died childless), Symon, Obadiah (died unmar.), Nathaniel, and Jonathan. (Harris' Epitaphs)

John Coolidge and wife Mary came over before 1635, possibly in 1630, from Cambridge, England, and settled west of Fresh Pond where Arlington Street crosses Concord Avenue, but he owned many other lots. He was freeman in 1636, Selectman and Representative, and was often called on to settle estates. All the Coolidges are descended from his four sons. In 1678 "father Coolidg" was a Tithingman and had to go about town to see that every one take the oath of fidelity. (Great Little Watertown)
