Published in the Paducah Sun, Paducah, McCracken Co. Ky., 4 Feb 2006 - METROPOLIS, Ill. -- Mattie Ann "Pat" Holmes was born May 14, 1911, in Hardin County, Ill. She passed away at Tender Loving Care Assisted Living Home on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, after a lengthy illness.

On Dec. 31, 1938, she married Grover E. Holmes. The couple settled in Metropolis where Grover had his law practice, and Pat soon learned to expect the unexpected. When Grover brought clients or colleagues to dinner, they always found a table filled with delicious food and afterwards a quiet room where business could be conducted.

After Grover's death in 1965, and with her children grown, Pat enrolled in nursing classes at Massac Memorial Hospital and became a CNA. She loved nursing and spent many years working at the hospital and also taking care of patients as a private duty nurse. She was actively involved in politics and worked vigorously for Republican candidates and for issues that were important to her, such as the Right to Life Movement.

Pat served two terms as president of the Massac County Republican Women's Club, and also as County Republican Committee Chairwoman. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Mattie Ann Baldwin, eight brothers and sisters; her husband, Grover E. Holmes; and two stepchildren, John Henry "Jack" Holmes, and Mary Elizabeth Holmes Dye. She is survived by two children, Judy Holmes Comparetto and husband, George, of Tryon, N.C., and Jerry Edward Holmes and wife, Nancy, of Gaithersburg, Md. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Col. Rufus Dye of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Gold bless her memory!

Visitation will be held at the Miller Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006. Services will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, followed by a gathering of friends and family in the Parish House to honor Pat's memory. Burial will be in Massac Memorial Gardens beside her beloved husband.
