(My Father-In-Law, a feisty Scotsman!)

Billy Max Payton, 82, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas on February 8, 2003.

He was born on July 11, 1920 to Charles and Bertha (Fruits) Payton at 805 W. Pine in Independence, KS. He had a twin sister, Mary Maxine, who died at birth.

He graduated from Independence Junior College and joined the Army - Air Force during WWII.

He married Barbara Louise Kirchoff on December 21, 1964. She survives of the home.

Max worked in the oil fields most of his life, taking an early retirement in 1983 to help Barbara care for Gina, who has cerebal palsy.

He hated corn and would only drink water with his meals.

He is also survived by his stepson, Michael Kirchoff, whom he raised as his own; and a daughter, Gina Kay Payton, also of the home.

He is preceded in death by both parents and all of his siblings: Viola, Dorothy Hilton, Retha Cones, Lottie Reesman and his twin, Mary.
