Paul and his siblings were reared by his maternal grandparents after the early deaths of their parents. He served in the US Army and the Oklahoma National Guard. He and Donna Sue May were married on 30 March 1993 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had a son, James Adams, and a daughter, Jennifer (Bob) Heil, four grandchildren.
