Six U.S. Marines and two Nepalese soldiers were aboard a Marine helicopter that crashed during a relief mission in earthquake-hit Nepal. The aircraft is attached to Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 based at Camp Pendleton. The squadron was in the Philippines on a training mission when it was directed to Nepal to join the relief effort after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on April 25 that killed more than 8,300 people.

The U.S. Marines who were killed were:

Capt Christopher L Norgren of Kansas
Sgt Ward M Johnson IV of Florida
Sgt Eric M Seaman of California
Cpl Sara A Medina of Illinois
Lance Cpl Jacob A Hug of Arizona
according to a statement from the U.S. military joint task force in Okinawa, Japan.

Nepal's army identified its soldiers as:
Tapendra Rawal and Basanta Titara
and said all eight bodies have been flown to Kathmandu.

ST. PAUL — Capt. Dustin R. Lukasiewicz, 29, of Fallbrook, Calif., died May 12, 2015, in a helicopter accident while on a humanitarian mission in Nepal while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the St. Paul High School gymnasium. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery south of Farwell, with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Farwell, with a wake service at 7 p.m. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is assisting the family.

Capt. Lukasiewicz was born June 17, 1985, in Kearney to Keith and Cheryl (Morris) Lukasiewicz.

He married Ashley Cotham on May 27, 2011, in San Diego.

Survivors include his wife, of Fallbrook, Calif.; a daughter, Isabelle, at home; a son due to be born in June; his father, Keith Lukasiewicz of Farwell; his mother, Cheryl Schepker and her husband, Kris, of Axtell; grandparents, Ted and Pat Lukasiewicz of Farwell; his grandmother, Lois Ahart of Littleton, Colo.; his step-grandmother, Sharon Richardson of Holdrege; two sisters and brothers-in-law; Danielle and Anthony Kersten of Grand Island and Nicole and Derek Ingram of Minden; a brother-in-law, Thomas Altman of Nashville, Tenn.; a niece, Brooklyn Ingram; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and members of Ashley’s family.

Dustin was raised south of Wilcox and graduated from Wilcox-Hildreth High School in 2003. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in 2007 with a bachelor of science degree in political science. While attending UNL, Dustin was an active member of ROTC. He then attended Officer Candidates School, receiving his commission on March 28, 2008, and his Wings on Sept. 30, 2010.

Dustin served in Afghanistan from May until November 2012. In November 2014, he was deployed to Okinawa, Thailand, South Korea and the Philippines, before being sent to Nepal in May 2015 to help get supplies to the people of Nepal after an earthquake.

During his service in the Marine Corps, he received the Afghanistan Campaign Bronze Star, Strike/Flight No. 5 Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

At the time of his death, he was enrolled in graduate school, working on his master’s degree in political science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Dustin loved his daughter and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his new son. Dustin recently fulfilled a dream of owning land in Nebraska when he and Ashley purchased land near St. Paul. He liked to read historical and military books, as well as building and refinishing furniture and antiques. He loved Nebraska football, farming and politics.

He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Fallbrook, Calif.

Dustin was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kay Morris; a step-grandfather, Bill Ahart; and a father-in-law, Mark Cotham.
