Alford Pamer (A.P.) Hustad was born in Farwell, Minnesota, on June 7, 1897, the son of Lewis P. and Emma (Stone) Hustad. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Kensington area where his parents farmed. A.P. became interested in the lumber business through his position at Kensington Lumber and Hardware and spent three years with Sletten Lumber Company in Elbow Lake before going into partnership at Mackintosh, South Dakota. In 1923 A.P. married Cora Haugen of Elbow Lake, Minnesota. In 1936 the family moved to Graveville where Mr. Hustad owned and operated the A.P. Hustad Implement. In 1946 A.P. came to Alexandria where he purchased the Brown Brothers Store which was on the present site of Red Owl. One year later he built the building on 3rd Avenue East which for many years was the home of Hustad Implement and International Harvester. In 1962 he built the Western Lumber Supply Company which he operated until May 1970 during which time he built many homes and helped to develop Runestone Heights.
A.P. was an active member of the Minneapolis Implement Dealers Association, at one time being vice president. For sixteen years he was director of the Alexandria Board of Public Works serving also as its president. He served on the Board of Knute Nelson Home and the First Lutheran Church. A.P. was also a member of the Alexandria Developers and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a devoted Kiwanis Club member.
A.P. died June 26, 1984, at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 87 years. His wife Cora died in 1968 following a long illness. Later A.P. married Nancy Edinger of Alexandria who passed away in 1982.
He is survived by son: Don and wife Donna Hustad of Alexandria; daughters: Mrs. Richard (Betty) Rathburn of Detroit Lakes; Mrs. Warren (Dorothy) Hovren of Glenwood; Mrs. Duane (Marlene) Engstrom of Edina; Mrs. Thomas (Jane) Osterberg of Marshall; brother: Grant L. Hustad, Sr., of Glenwood; sisters: Mrs. Lillian Buntrock of Sun City, AZ; Amanda Sandblast of Bethany Home, Alexandria. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and one great grandson.
A.P. was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cora, 2nd wife Nancy, three brothers, two sisters, and grandson Steven Hustad.
Funeral services were held June 29, 1984 at First Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minnesota with Rev. Nancy Larson and Rev. Jack Hustad officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota.
Pallbearers were David Rathbun, Kent Hustad, Tom Hustad, Mark Hovren, John Hovren, Peter Engstrom, rolf Engstrom, Erik Osterberg and Jon Osterberg.
