Dr Joel Dorius was one of three Smith College Professors involved in a pornography scandel in 1960. He was alleged to have procured gay pornography, illegal at that time. It turned out to be nothing more than bodybuilder and muscle magazines. Still he and the other professors were found guilty and were dismissed from the college. Dr. Dorius had his conviction overturned in 1963. He was than appointed a professor at San Francisco State, were he served until 1984. He became an icon for the gay rights movement. His story was told in the 2005 film, The Great Pink Scare.
