Mr. Crowell...how do I even begin to describe him? Crowell was a gentle giant. He was so tall that he had to duck down under his classroom door to enter. Once he entered, he obtained the utmost respect from his Special Education students. Crowell's classroom was two doors down from mine at Colleton Middle School. He brightened each day for me. He was full of humor--always telling jokes and funny stories. Faculty meetings and in-services were a blast. He and I would always save seats for each other just so we could "cut up" during the meetings, and laugh about it later. He was so looking forward to the upcoming 2006-2007 school year. He would have retired from his long teaching career. He and I went to different schools within the district, but our friendship never separated. I will truly miss him when the new school year begins. The last words he said to a friend of mine the last day of school was, "One hundred ninety more days!", and I'm sure he was grinning big when he said that. I guess God needed a comedian in Heaven, so he took Chris Crowell on June 14, 2006.

Chris loved his wife, and adored his son Drew. Chris and Drew had dinner together the evening he died. He was complaining that he didn't feel well. He went upstairs in his home to lie down, and had a massive heart attack at the age of 58.

His obituary, printed in the June 16, 2006 edition of the Post and Courier reads as follows:

Christopher Crowell entered into eternal rest on June 14, 2006. He was the husband of Gay Treiber Crowell. Chris was born in North Wilkesboro, NC, August 19, 1947, the son of Thomas Oliver Crowell and Pauline Stewart Crowell. He was a former Special Education Teacher in Charleston and Berkeley Counties and was a Special Education Teacher at Forest Circle Middle School in Colleton County. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Chris was a former boy's basketball coach at Garrett High School and Goose Creek High School. He was a former girl's tennis, track, and basketball coach at Goose Creek High School.

Surviving are his wife of Charleston, SC; two sons, Drew Thomas Crowell of Charleston, SC, and Robert G. Coon of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Stephanie M. Poston of Goose Creek, SC; two grandchildren.

I will remember Chris for his love of teaching, his love of his students, his love of his family, his love of golfing, his fundraising for Relay for Life, morning coffee breaks, "conferences", his love for the University of North Carolina, and his overall love of life.

Colleton County lost a great teacher!!
