Daughter of Harriet Baker Hogeland Dean (1845 England-1898 WI)
& Jacob E. Hogeland (1839 NY-1912 MI). Harriet Baker & Jacob E. Hogeland divorced in 1865. He remarried Oct 1865 Kent Co., MI and raised a second family in Grand Traverse County, Michigan.

Although some records indicate that Mary Ann & her brother were born in "New York" they were definitely born in Wisconsin. Her parents separated before her birth. Mary Ann Hogeland never met her father during her life. It is unlikely her mother Harriett shared Hogeland family information with her children & after brother Joseph "Richard" left for the West Coast the Hogeland family history was "lost" to both of them & to their children.

Harriet Baker Hogeland married Enos P. Dean (WI) Aug 21, 1875 ("Monticello Express" dated 21 Sep 1875), she died 3 Dec 1898,Oxford, Marquette Co., WI. Family records state that Harriet Dean is buried in this cemetery. Mary Ann's brother Joseph Richard Hogeland (b. 1861 WI) died 1917 & is buried @ Heppner, Morrow Co, Oregon.

Mary Ann Hogeland & John W. James were married 1881 @ Oxford, Marquette Co., WI - they are parents to 10 children: Effie (1882-1966), Clara (1884-1966), Hattie (1886-1926), Leroy E. "Roy"(1890-1981), Maynard John (1893-1981), Ella Mary (1895-1981), Harvey Robert (1899-1981), Harold Arden (1902-1955), Lola Mae (1905-1925) & Alma Rae (1908-1997).

After the death of her husband Mary Ann moved to the home of her married daughter Alma Rae James Rienert in Winnebago Co. where she lived until her death.
