Shirley Ann Gamache, 81, died Monday May 18, 2015 at a local nursing home. Shirley was born August 10, 1933 in Arlington, VA and was the daughter of the late Frederick Otto Appleton and Mabel Linwood Angelo Appleton. She was a graduate of Washington & Lee High School in the Class of 1951. She met her late husband Norman Leo Gamache and was married May 10, 1952. She then began her life as a military wife. Shirley loved the military life and was a devoted mother and grandmother and had been an active member of Job's Daughters. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brothers, George Appleton, Francis Spindle, and Frederick Appleton. Shirley is survived by her children, John Gamache, of Miami, FL, and Kathryn Sathre and her husband Howard, of Bluefield, VA; a brother, Robert Appleton and wife Louise of St. Petersburg, FL; three grandchildren, Melinda Genda and husband Jeff of Harrisonburg, PA, Paul Sathre of Blacksburg, VA, and Nicole Sathre of Bluefield, VA; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Genda. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC at 10:00 AM. The family suggest in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to Alzheimer's Association, 1111 Lee St East, Charleston, WV 25301, or Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belford Rd, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
