Ormal was a half-brother to Charles Malloch, father of Ruth Malloch Wickman.
Ormal was working for the Ford River Lumber Co, where he was in charge of scaling logs & lumber.
In 1893, Ormal was elected to the House of Representatives & later the Michigan Senate. He was elected Auditor Genera; in 1908 & served 24 years. It was said that he never lost an election. He was known as "The Watchdog of the Michigan Treasury & his roll-top desk in the capitol.
