Don Jay Ammerman,84,of Fredericksburg, formerly of King George, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Mary Washington Hospital, following a time of declining health.

He was born March 20, 1931 in Geneva, NY and was the son of the late James Wesley and Eva Lyons Ammerman.

Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anne Britton Ammerman of Fredericksburg; son Wesley George Ammerman of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Ann Ammerman Wildasin of Elizabethtown, PA. Also brother-in-law George Britton (Irene); niece Lynda Wildasin Watkins (Duane); nephew Clay Britton (Stacia) and great nieces and nephews.

Don graduated from Geneva High School, class of 1948 and was a proud graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1953. He served in the United States Navy 1953 – 1958, serving aboard the USS Picking, USS Goldfinch and as commanding officer of the USS Yazoo. He served an additional 21 years in the Navy Reserve attaining the rank of Commander.

In civilian life he worked for NSWC in Dahlgren, VA and later for EG&G and URS as an engineer working in the area of missile safety for the U.S. government. Retiring in 1994 his combined years of military and civilian service equaled 41 years.

Don served his community serving on the board of trustees of the Smoot Library in King George. He was an active member of Dahlgren United Methodist Church, serving as a lay minister prior to joining Oakland Baptist Church. He served as Sunday School superintendent, deacon, finance committee chairman and was honored as deacon emeritus.

Don enjoyed playing a good game of golf with his friends and his wife, Anne and attending Navy football games.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 24 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 at Oakland Baptist Church, Dahlgren. Interment will follow in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.
