Anton and his brother Frank opened a small store in South River, NJ. Within the next couple of years they opened another store in Iselin, NJ. Soon after, the newly formed co-op known as Shop-Rite Supermarkets approached them and the brothers joined forces with other early founders and pioneers of Shop- Rite by opening their first Shop-Rite Supermarket in 1952.
Anton served for many years on the Board of Directors for Wakefern Food Corporation, which is the corporate hub of the Shop-Rite Co-op retail food conglomerate.
Predeceased by his wife Irene Ulyak Smutka.
Surviving are 2 sons, 1 daughter, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
