Jean Cranston Carter was the son of Alvah Lawrence Carter and Florence Maud Cranston Carter. He was the grandson of William Wallace Cranston, Civil War veteran and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Jean Cranston Carter was married to Mary Prewitt Atkinson Carter March. After his death in 1928, she married George Miles March.

He was interred in the Mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery on 20 Mar 1928.

Jean has a marker at Oakwood Cemetery in Labette County, Kansas, so he was either disinterred from the Mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery and reinterred in Oakwood, or the marker at Oakwood is a cenotaph.
