Major Ernest Adair Sale was the son of William Michael Sale and Esteline Sarah Templeton. He married first to Frances Cochran. Widowed, he married Bettie Walker Morrison.

"Maj. Ernest A. Sale. E. A. Sale, one of the founders of Huger-Davidson-Sale wholesale grocery business in Lexington in 1901, served as quartermaster, purchasing agent, and treasurer of VMI from 1913 until his death in 1935." According to his daughter Frances' 1992 obit.

On the 1880 Fairfield. Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found carpenter William M. Sale, 40; wife Esteline Sale, 42; children Anna M. Sale, 13; William W. Sale, 10; Earnest A. Sale, 9 and Bertie Sale, 7, all VA born.

On the 1900 South River, Rockbridge Co., VA censu, I found farmer Ernest A Sale, 29, born Apr 1871; wife of 3 years Frances Sale, 25, Feb 1876 and son Ernest A Sale, Jr., 1, May 1899, all VA born.

On the 1910 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found wholesale grocery traveling salesman Ernest A Sale, 39; wife of 12 years, Frances C Sale, 25, had 2 kids; son Ernest A Sale, r., 10; daughter Frances E Sale, 5 and servant Mary E Anderson, 40, all VA. born.

On the 1930 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found military school purchasing school, Earnest A Sale, 59, 1st married at age 26; wife Betty M Sale, 58, 1st married at age 45; servant Betty Anderson, 50 and lodger Effie L Irwin, 50, all VA born.

Ernest Adair Sale was born 28 March 1871 in Fairfield, VA, to parents Wm Michiel Sale and Esteline Templeton (both Rockbridge Co. born). He was the spouse of Bettie M Sale. On 27 Oct 1935, he died at home on Jefferson Street, in Lexington, Rockridge Co., VA. Ernest Ashton Sale of Covington, VA, was the informant. VA Cert. of Death #24689.
