MABRY, DESCENDANT OF EARLY KNOX FAMILY, DIES

William Rogers Mabry, Sr., of Aldenwood Road, was a grandson of Knoxville pioneer, Joseph A. Mabry, Sr., died this morning after a brief illness at Brakebill Nursing Home. He was 83 years old.

Mabry, a former merchandise manager for shoes at Miller's Department Store began his career at Miller's in 1933, and later became a buyer and divisional merchandise manager for the department store. He retired in 1969.

Mabry was a World War I veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was an avid golfer and was a former member of Holston Hills and Deane Hill Country Clubs. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Lucille (Henry) Mabry. He is also survived by five children, William Rogers, Jr., James Fleming, John Joseph, Mrs. Gertrude Mabry Sharpe and Mrs. Helen Mabry Connor, all of Knoxville; and five brothers and sisters, Brooks, Charlton, and Mrs. Worth Mabry Lebow, all of Knoxville, Mrs. Almeda Mabry Jones, Chattanooga, and Mrs. Evelyn Mabry Claxton, Asheville, N.C.

A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mann's Chapel. The family will receive friends from 8 to 9 p.m. Graveside services will be Friday at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
