Emerson "Cleet" Bate, 83, Greenville, South Carolina, died there on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born April 6, 1920 in Forest County, Wisconsin, he was the son of Thomas Edward and Mary Myrna (Pitts) Bate. The family moved shortly thereafter to the Greensburg area where he grew up. He married Eleanor Harrell who preceded him in death in 1983.

He served as an Army front-line medic in the South Pacific during W.W.II and was wounded at the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and received the Purple Heart. Following the war, he farmed in Ripley County for several years. In 1956, he yielded to God's call to full time Christian service. After receiving ministerial training at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC., he pastored several churches in Indiana and upstate New York until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by three sons, Thomas Bate of North Vernon, Michael Bate of Greenville, SC. and Richard Bate of Lexington, KY.; a brother, Odell Bate of Greensburg; a sister, Breta Bate Buer of Greensburg; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Oscar Bate, and four sisters, Olive Robbins, Vergie Tressler, Jewell Ramer and Gladys Davis.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Also, a memorial service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
