GREENE CHANDLER DIES IN MEMPHIS
Husband of Former Mary Pegues Holcomb

Services for Greene C. Chandler, prominent land owner of Memphis and Bailey, Tenn., whose wife is Mrs. Mary Pegues Chandler, member of a prominent Tupelo family, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today from the J. T. Hinton and Son chapel in Memphis. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. He was 54.

Mr. Chandler died at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis at 6:15 a.m. Friday after an illness of about a year. He had made many friends in Tupelo where he and his wife maintained a home.

For many years until he retired in 1945, Mr. Chandler was with the U.S. Engineers. He also owned the Greene Chandler's Service Station in Memphis and extensive farm lands in the Bailey and Colliersville area of Tennessee.

Earlier in life he had been a traveling salesman and maintained his head headquarters in Tupelo for several years.

Mr. Chandler was born in Jackson, Tenn, the son of William H. and Knoxie Clift Chandler. He moved with his family to Memphis at the age of six. He was an outstanding athlete at Central High School there. During World War I he served in the Army on the Mexican border and in France with the 115th Field Artilery.

He was a member of the Masonsic Order and the Scottish Rite, a Shriner, and an American Legionnaire. He was also a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral.

Mr. Chandler leaves his wife; a step-daughter, Miss Maralyn Holcomb of Tupelo; three brothers , former Mayor Walter Chandler of Memphis; William H. Chandler of Memphis; Hugh C. Chandler of Gainesville, Fla; three sisters, Mr. C. B. Dudley of Norwood, LA., Mrs. George D. Lansing of Providence, R.I. and Mrs. Dudley S. Weaver of Memphis.
