Henry was a Carroll County farmer. He operated Maple Leaf Farm outside of Taneytown for over 40 years. In the 60s and 70s he was also a manager at Random House. After retirement, he sold real estate until 1997 as a broker for ERA Alexander in Taneytown. He was an active life-long member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, having served on many committees, and was a member and past president of the former Kiwanis Club of Taneytown. Henry was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. When he was 18 years old, he was drafted by the Washington Senators, and was assigned to their minor league team in Orlando, FL as a left-handed pitcher. He enjoyed watching and playing baseball, hunting, fishing, playing golf in later years, and spending time with his family.
Surviving are son, Henry Alexander, Jr. and wife Patricia of Thurmont; daughters, Joan Shry and husband Hobson of Woodbine, and Carol Horton of Taneytown; grandchildren, Kelly Alexander, Scott Alexander and wife Carrie, Jeremy Shry and wife Shannon, and Benjamin Horton; great-grandsons, Caleb Alexander and Connor Shry; sister, Dorothy Bickley of Alexandria, VA; brother, Andrew Alexander of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Blanche Slagle of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Mary Louise Shaw.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2015 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home 136 E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD, with Pastor Stacy Marsh of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 31, and Monday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
