Thank you for this information ... no documentary evidence of the year of birth of Thomas Askey. The earliest reference to "about 1727" (the earliest being the one closest to his alleged DOB) was in a DAR application from 1901. Where he was born is also undocumented. From the 125 DAR applicants, starting with the first claiming Thomas Askey as an ancestor, YOBs range from unknown, 1727, 1728, 1729, 1730 to 1745, none with reference to a source. Places of birth include Ireland, England and Pennsylvania, again without any source. Thomas Askey died in spring of 1807 based on probate records in Bellefonte, Pa. No exact date of his death is known. I believe the temptation to fill a YOB in the blank on the DAR application form was too great and once one of the earliest applicants guessed 1727 many others followed suit. Eventually the preponderance of 1727 YOBs led to the general acceptance and unquestioning of the date. Finally in 1969 a DAR genealogist complied biographical summaries of all of the Franklin County, Pa., Revolutionary War soldiers and stated in the published book Thomas Askey's YOB as 1727. Somehow, after over 240 years after his alleged YOB, the year 1727 come to be represented as fact, the first instance of its "documentation." ... Contributor: Donald Askey (51048864)
