Bob Wegman was chairman of Wegmans Food Markets Inc. for over 50 years, builing an innovative company that combined business success with humanitarian ideals. Wegmans has always been innovative, from installing glass doors for refrigerated foods in the 1930's to introducing the Universal Product Code(UPC) in the 1980's, which is now the industry standard. It has consistently ranked among the top companies to work for in Fortune Magazine, taking first place the last 2 years of Mr. Wegman's life.

Mr. Wegman was a graduate of Niagara University in 1941 and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Wegman will be remembered for his unparalled philanthropic generosity of educational causes among Catholic schools at all levels: elementary, high school and at the college level, most recently founding a school of pharmacy at St. John Fisher College. To his high school alma mater Aquinas Institute, which he credited for his success, he made significant contributions to the building of a science center and a sports stadium. In 1995, he donated $25 million to help Rochester children attend Catholic schools, which is considered the largest gift to Catholic elementary education in the United States. He was a major benefactor of St. John Fisher College in Rochester which is where his public funeral was held, presided over by Bishop Matthew Clark. The bulk of his estate was left to charitable causes while keeping Wegmans Food Markets under the direction of his family to continue his dedication to customers, employees and charity to the community.
