SALINA, Oklahoma- Carl Belew, a country music performer and writer of such hits as "Lonely Street" and "Am I That Easy to Forget," died Wednesday. He was 59. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ross-Mayes Cemetery under the direction of Jim Green Funeral Home in Pryor.

Belew, born in Salina, returned here in the 1970s after a career in country music spanning three decades. In Salina, he performed at fund-raisers for a variety
of projects until his health worsened. A Carl Belew Appreciation Day was held in 1986.

Belew performed in northeast Oklahoma as a youth, and landed a spot on the "Louisiana Hayride" program in the early 1950s. His career soared when Andy Williams recorded "Lonely Street" a few years later. Other artists recording Belew songs include Dean Martin, Debbie Reynolds, George Jones, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline, Burl Ives, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Conway Twitty. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1976. As a recording artist, Belew sang on a number of singles and albums for Decca and RCA Victor in the late 1950s through the mid-'60s. One of his biggest recordings was 1962's "Hello Out There," written by Quapaw native Wayne P. Walker.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine; one son, the Rev. Robert Gene Belew; his mother, Leora Belew; one sister, Leona Sexton; all of Salina; and three grandchildren.
