Robert was the son of George and Isabel (McLean) Goodale. He attended Yale University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1932 and with a Masters Degree in Music in 1936. During the summers of 1932-1935 he was the organist in the First Congregational Church of Danbury, CT. In 1936 he was organist and choir director at Yale Divinity School. In Nov 1936 he was appointed organist and choir director of the Unitarian Meeting House in Hartford, CT. In 1941 he accepted a position at Hollins College in Salem, VA where he eventually became head of the Department of Music. It was at Hollins that he met and married Marjory Livingston. He and Marjory had two children: Christina and Peggy. Robert and Marjory divorced sometime in 1947 to 1948 period. By 1948 Robert was an assistant professor of Music at Bryn Mar College. It was at Bryn Mar that he met and married a graduate student named Hope Kaufmann.
