Ella was the daughter of Yates Hollingsworth and Nancy Veron Mote. She was raised in a Quaker household. She married Stephen Douglas Phay in about 1879 in Iowa. They had two children, Ralph and June. At the time of Stephen's death in 1915, George Record (who lived in LaGrande, Oregon) wrote a letter of condolence to Ella. This was the beginning of a correspondence and a renewal of their friendship. Years before, Stephen and Ella lived in LeGrande, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. George Record were their closest friends. Mr. Record had been alone several years after Mrs. Records' death. They were two very lonely people, who needed companionship so they married. They lovingly cared for each other during their remaining years.
