Frances M. “Fran” Mangan, 95, of Kiel passed away on Tuesday morning December 12, 2017 at Oak Creek Assisted Living where she had been a resident for the past 4 weeks. She is the former Frances Mertens born on March 16, 1922 in the Township of New Holstein near St. Anna, daughter of the late Joseph & Catherine (Heus) Mertens. Fran graduated from St. Ann Catholic School and attended Kiel High School. On May 13, 1944 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Mangan at St. Joseph's Church, Appleton. She and Gib moved back to Kiel and established Kiel Motor Co. During her lifetime Fran also was a nanny for the Otto Heider Family of Sheboygan, a receptionist for Dr. Engel, worked at Zwickie Woolen Mills, Appleton and Steibel's Ladies Apparel, Kiel. Above all else she was proud to raise her family and volunteer wherever she was needed, especially church and the parochial school. Fran drove for the senior citizens and delivered meals on wheels. She was an active member of the Christian Women, Catholic Knights and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Starting in 1946, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, belonging to the Kasper, Beckley, Wilkens Post of Kiel and later the New Holstein Post #124. Fran was a longtime member of the Kiel and New Holstein Historical Society.

She is survived by her six children: Suzanne (David) Pautz, Kiel, James (Georgia) Mangan, Osman, Helen (Dennis) Brost, School Hill, Marvin (Diane) Mangan, Green Bay, Lou Ann (Mike) Herzog, Newton & Michael Mangan. She is further survived by fifteen grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Fran was the last survivor of the Mertens & Mangan clan of the “Greatest Generation”. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son; Joseph, her husband; Gilbert (2008), infant sister and an infant brother, sisters; Victoria “Vicki” (Sy) Lerch, Joan (Merlin) Nickel, brother; Cletus (Verdel “Timmie”) Mertens along with 10 Mangan brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and their spouses.

Funeral Mass for Fran will be held on Saturday December 16, 2017 at 11:30am at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church (413 Fremont St. Kiel). Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of Mass at 11:30am.

Fran's family would like to thank the caring staff of Oak Creek and St. Nicholas Hospice for making her last days comfortable. They would especially like to thank Dr. James Pawlak for his many years of caring for Fran. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her name.
