He was born June 1, 1923 in Osseo Wisconsin to Marshall and Grace (Isom) Cardinal. At an early age the family relocated to Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. In 1941 he graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior High School as class president.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and proudly serviced 3 years with the Field Artillery Division, and trained at Fort Bragg North Carolina. Fought in World War II - Battle of the Bulge. He served throughout England, France, and Germany. He retired as a Corporal with Honorable Discharge.
He married Mary Jane (Miller) on February 7, 1942. Their years of marriage extended beyond 71 years. Together they raised a son.
He enjoyed woodworking and craft shows. Spencer and Mary Jane enjoyed many years of wintering in Florida, camping, snowmobiling, and many cards games with a very close knit group of friends.
He is survived by his wife Mary Jane of 71 years, Son Steve (Joanne), Brother Jim (Rogene), granddaughters Cindy (Craig) DeMoe, Kelly (Brooks) Fleming, great grandchildren Ashley and Benjamin, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Marshall and Grace.
The family wishes to thank Hospice Services for their positive and knowledgeable care, special thanks to Mauricia. Special thanks to Dove West’s Palliative Care Unit – Reflections staff. Also thank you to neighbors Beattie’s, Saltness’s, Martin’s, Mike, and the Gruen family.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Lake Street United Methodist Church in Eau Claire.

Funeral services will take place at 4 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Lake Street United Methodist Church, 337 Lake Street, Eau Claire, WI 54703. Pastor Graham N. West will officiate. Visitation will take place at the church on Wednesday from 2 pm until the time of services. Private family burial will take place at a later date in the Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington with military honors being rendered by American Legion Post #53.
