Heinichen was a German composer of baroque and church music. Initially he served as an assistant of the cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzich. Below he studied at the famous Thomasschule in that city. He began a career as lawyer in Weissenfels until 1709. For a short period he came back to Leipzig, where he continued his musical activity. He remained to study seven years in Italy, mainly Venice, with the explicit purpose of studying the art of Italian opera at its source. In 1717 he became Court Kapellmeister in Dresden, a position he held until his death in 1729.
Johann David Heinichen wrote single operas. Of his instrumental music survived approximately two dozen concertos, including a number of concerto's for chamber music. On request of his employer, he wrote a number of serenades and other celebration piece for voices and instruments.
The cause of his dead was tuberculosis.
