Enlisted, August 13, 1862, at Java, New York; mustered in as private, Co. C, 1st N.Y. Dragoons Regiment, August 14, 1862, to serve three years; appointed corporal, September 1, 1863; wounded, October 19, 1864; absent at muster out of company.

Artemus was from the small town of Java, Wyoming County. He had been a carpenter. His first wife was Dorcas Thorton Jackson with who he had three children, He married Hattie on New Year's Day in Lily Dale NY , 1898.
One record indicates his children were Albert, Grace and Mary, but his obit says his child D. (or ?B). E. Jackson of East Arcade NY attended his funeral

In the Civil War he was wounded at Cedar Creek Virginia October 1864 and mustered out.
