Composer. He was the first American to compose operettas in the European style. His works include "Don Quixote" (1889), "Robin Hood" (1890 – which had his most famous song "Oh Promise Me"), "The Knickerbockers" (1892), "Rob Roy" (1894), "The Highwayman" (1897- songs included "Moonlight Song" and "Do You Remember Love?") and "Rip Van Winkle" (1920). He wrote over 450 compositions, and was founder of the Washington D.C. Symphony Orchestra.
