Former Councilman and retired contractor

John Strother Hutzler, 81, retired contractor of 614 West Virginia Ave., Martinsburg, died at 7 a.m. today in City Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks.

He was born April 1, 1893 in Berkeley County, W. Va., the son of the late Aquilla James and Sarah Lavina DeHaven Hutzler.

Mr. Hutzler was a long time member of St. Luke's United Church, Martinsburg. He was engaged in the contracting business for approximately 40 years and after retirement from private business became affiliated with his son-in-law, W. Harley Miller, acting as superintendent for a number of years.

An active member of the Democratic party, he served three terms as Councilman in Martinsburg and was a former Democratic committeeman.

His wife, the former Onita J. Whitacre, whom he married June 22, 1916, preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 1965.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. W. Harley (Sarah) Miller of Martinsburg; two sons, John N. Hutzler, Sr. and Dr. James Bernard Hutzler, both of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Hutzler was the last of his immediate family.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, by the Rev. Richard Chambers and Chaplain Howard L. Fulk. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg today and Sunday

from 7 to 9 p.m.
