Son of George Cook Buell and Katherine Dexter (Clark) Buell.

He originated and worked as head operating expert (educator) for the Omaha Railroad College in Omaha, which at the time (1910), was the only one in the world. The college was also known as the Union Pacific Educational Bureau.

Dexter was married twice. His first wife was Elise Cleaver, who he married on January 17, 1911 in Chicago, Illinois. She died in August 16, 1913. She is not listed in online cemetery records for Forest Lawn. Her death notice appears as following:

Mrs. D. C. Buell died at her home, 4032 Izard street, yesterday. She leaves an infant two weeks old and another child eighteen months of age. Mrs. Buell was the wife of Mr. D. C. Buell, superintendent of the educational bureau of the Union Pacific, and was formerly Miss Elise Cleaver of Chicago.

Dexter married Elma Jane Milliken in 1915. She was the daughter of James and Josephine Milliken.

Notice of his death was published in the Omaha World Herald morning paper on January 23, 1960, page 16.
