Lonnie Witt
Lonnie V. Witt, 92, of Caldwell, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, in Nampa, of natural causes. Lonnie was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Bruno, Ark., the second of six children born to James and Falby Jeannette Witt. His siblings were Zelma, Everett, Orville, Herbert and Naomi. He left home in his teens, hopping freight trains and ending up in Galax, Va., where he met his future wife, Beulah Redd, at a family gathering. They married on April 6, 1940.
Three children were born to this union: Patricia, Randy He enlisted in the Army during WWII, serving as a medical technician 4th grade, Detachment 17 Ordnance Battalion.
Lonnie was a craftsman by trade. From building homes, remodeling, concrete and masonry work to applying his artistic ability in veneer native stone walls, columns and fireplaces, he excelled. He was a self-taught artist, completing his first painting of Will Rogers (his hero) and Wiley Post at the age of 16. He was a true rock hound, and spent countless hours with his family in desert areas of New Mexico and Idaho. He particularly loved thunder eggs and all boulders and rocks in their natural settings.
His artistic talent and love of nature were reflected in his art and masonry work.
Lonnie was a loving parent and grandparent. He never allowed his children to go without the things they needed — a warm loving home and food on the table. He was always there for his children and grandchildren . We will miss his great sense of humor and his zest for life. He was often heard saying "Take five, boys — it'll only take a minute!", or "This won't take long — did it!"
He was a great story teller and told some amazing stories of his life experiences.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Beulah ; his sister, Zelma and his two brothers, Everett and Herbet Witt.
He is survived by his brother Orville Witt of Caldwell and his sister, Naomi (Elmer) Morris of Kalispell, Mont., and his children, Patricia (Jim) Forrer of Caldwell, Randy (Katy) Witt of Boise, and Lori (Bron) Berry of Melba; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren . The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Ruth Barnhill, and Cyndi Burns, the Progressive Care nursing staff and The Thompson House, Assisted Living, for their love and care during his final months.
Cremation will be provided by Flahiff Funeral Chapel in Caldwell.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to any charity of your choice.
