Elbert was born into a very wealthy Pittsburgh family. His father, Leonard P. Seeley was prominent in banking and finance. Leonard and his wife Mary (Marie) had three daughters and one son, Elbert.
Elbert was a poet, with his poems often light-hearted, appearing in newspapers and magazines
Elbert married Elizabeth Moony in 1905. The couple had sons Elbert JR. and Edward. In 1917 Elbert Sr was living with his mother, now Mary Jewell, in Lily Dale NY,
At some point Elbert became the victim of despondency and addiction, and ? may have been bipolar. .Buffalo newspapers were harsh and cruel to him. Mary tried to help him, his wealthy sisters refused. Elbert ended his life in Buffalo NY, his mother took him home to Lily Dale NY, where he is buried next to her.

On Feb, 21 in the 1920 census, Elbert is recorded as in the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane in Philadelphia

In 1951, 29 years later, Elbert's nephew committed suicide too. That nephew left his considerable fortune to his 82 year old maiden aunt, Kate Bald, who was living in Lily Dale.
