Melvin A. (Buddy) Jaehnig, 85, former village of Cleveland resident, went home to his Lord, June 15, 2015, at Shady Lane Nursing Center in Manitowoc. He was born February 25, 1930, in Town Centerville, the son of the late Ernst and Helen Roehl Jaehnig. He attended Pleasant Hill Grade School in Town Centerville. Melvin joined the Army and served both Stateside and in Puerto Rico. After his honorable discharge, Melvin continued his education completing in Madison the U.W. Agricultural Short Course. On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage to Kathryn A. Schmahl at St. Mark UCC in town Mosel. The couple resided in town Newton until 1962, when they moved to Cleveland. Melvin was employed at the Cleveland Coop, Kohler Co. and for 32 years with American Breeders Service, until he retired in 1992. Melvin was a member of St. Mark UCC and served on the church Consistory, as well as a Sunday School Teacher and choir member. Melvin was a member of the Cleveland VFW Post 8974, as well as a member of the Red Cross Disaster Volunteers, helped organize the Lakeshore Disaster Support Group, was instrumental in the development of the Cleveland Blood Drive, a former member of the Cleveland Fire Department and the First Responders, Cleveland Senior Citizens Group and the Howards Grove FFA Alumni Group. He loved to bowl, play dart ball, play cribbage, sheepshead, wood working, and helping his friends with farm work.Melvin is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Cleveland; four nephews, David Jaehnig, Cleveland; Dennis (Marsha) Jaehnig, California; Larry and Terry Tonn, both from California; two nieces, Kathy (Thomas) LeFeber, Kiel and Diane Murphy of Orem Utah; as well as other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert (Caroline) Jaehnig and Edward Jaehnig;and one sister, Jeanette (Robert) Tonn.Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday June 20, 2015, at St. Mark UCC, 9286 Dairyland Drive, Cleveland (two and a half miles south of Cleveland) Reverend William Kesting will officiate and burial will follow at St. James UCC Church Cemetery in town Meeme. A short VFW Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday at the church, at 11:45 a.m.Friends may call at the church on Saturday June 20, 2015 from 9 a.m. until the hour of services. A memorial fund has been established in Melvin's name for St. Mark UCC and the American Red Cross. The Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel, Cleveland, is assisting the family with these funeral arrangements.
