Jacob was son of pioneer Valentine Leonhardt(Leonard) and Elizabeth. Although not much more than a boy, he enlisted in the last years of the Revolutionary War and fought along side his father under General Greene. With his father, he returned home after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Following his father's death in 1781, he became a farmer on a large scale. He married Elizabeth Shoaf and reared a large family. His body lies close to that of his father in the Old Leonhardt's (Pilgrim Church) Cemetery. He was 77 yrs old.
