James Seymour Jackson was the last of the four children born to Pendelton Seymour and Martha Myra (Vincent) Jackson, on their farm in Lincoln township of Ringgold County, Iowa. His older siblings were:
William Vincent (1892-1973) who married Mary Elizabeth Coverdale;
Helen Margaret (1896-1971) who married Charles Edward Cobb;
and
George Chetwin (1898-1968) who married Leona Gertrude Coghill.

When he was a young child, his parents moved to Chariton County, Missouri where they were enumerated in the 1910 Federal census. They then moved to Crawford County, Kansas where James' mother Martha "Myra" died in 1914. His father next moved to Bourbon County, Kansas where he was enumerated in the Kansas 1915 census. His father re-married in 1919 and James with his brother George went to live with their sister Helen who was living in Fort Scott.

On July 12, 1924 James married Myrtle Amy Sunburg, daughter of James Andrew and Bertha (Puhlman) Sunburg at Girard in Crawford County, Kansas. They farmed for a little while in Bourbon County, but James left the farm and went into business for himself. The 1930 census found them in Neosho, Kansas where he owned a furniture store. By 1935 they were in Clay Center, Kansas and in 1940 he was enumerated in Iola, Kansas with the occupation of "traveling salesman for a hardware supply company". They finally settled in Wichita, where he was a salesman until his retirement.

James and Myrtle did not have children, and at his death he was survived by his wife Myrtle; all three siblings; and three nephews and one niece.
