Colonel Sanford "Sam" Woodrow Griffin, Jr., US Army, Retired, 77, died Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at his home.

Born in Fort Mill, Sam was a son of the late Sanford W Griffin, Sr and Katie Osborne Griffin. He attended Fort Mill Grammar School and was a 1956 graduate of Indian Land High School. Sam served with the SC National Guard in Fort Mill from June 1954 to June 1963. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry in 1964 from Clemson College, where he served in the ROTC and was on the Pershing Rifle Drill Team and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant. Sam received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Furman University in 1973. He served in the U. S. Army from 1964 to 1986, where he received a Bronze Star with Valor and was a member of the 82nd Army Airborne and also the 101st Airborne Division. Sam was a former town manager of Fort Mill. He was a member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge No. 56.
