William was the 6th child of Ambrose G and Margaret (James) Bowling. He was born in Indiania and moved to Illinois with his parents when he was 8 or 9 years old. The family settled in Rock Island, IL. Bowling Township was name after his father. He married Sarah Ann Sutton in 1853. They had two children, Charles and Mary.
Mustered into service at Alton, IL September 4, 1862, August 15, 1862. Private Company J, 126 Regiment Illinois Inf. May and June 1863 detached service in Ambulance Corps. July and August 1863 absent - sick at Helena, AR Hospital with chronic Diarrhea, died at a St. Charles Hotel, enroute home, in Cario, IL. September 29, 1863, 31 years, 10 months, 10 days.

William is buried between Margaret Bowling (1st wife of his brother Samuel) and his daughter Mary E. Enlisted Rock Island, IL for 3 years.

Tombstone was lying flat in 1975.
