Mary Etta Huff was born 01 Mar 1854 in Van Buren County, Iowa, the oldest of six children of John Huff and Margaret Weber Huff. Although Mary's headstone and records from the time of her death indicate that she was born in 1854, early census records seem to indicate that she may have been born in 1855.

By 1856, the Huff family had moved to Des Moines Township in Jefferson County, Iowa where they remained through at least 1860. By 1870 they were living near Exline, Caldwell Township, in Appanoose County, Iowa.

On 16 Nov 1876, Mary married Frank (John Franklin) Adams, probably at the Zoar Chapel near Exline in Caldwell Township.

By 1880, Frank & Mary Adams had moved to Hardin County, Iowa, and by 1885 to Marshalltown in Marshall County, Iowa. By 1891, the family had moved to Omaha, Nebraska and lived near the corner of 6th and Bancroft Streets until at least 1907. Sometime between 1907 and 1910 the family moved to Beckham County in Western Oklahoma to farm there. After a few years the family left there and moved around between Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, including some time spent at the Longview Farm in Lee's Summit Missouri.

During the 1920's, Frank & Mary returned to Omaha, Nebraska and remained there for the rest of their lives.

Frank & Mary had 9 children, 6 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and other descendants:
Lillie May Adams (1877-1988) married Frederick Harley Moyer and had one child, Minne Myrtle Moyer Brewer (1897-1982);
Bert (Bertie) Adams (1879-1947) married Mame Spears (no children);
Albert LeRoy Adams (1881-1932) never married;
Oscar Adams (1884-1936) never married;
Etta Adams (1886-1969) married Henry Robert Parvin (no children);
Gertie A. Adams (1891-1899) died in childhood;
Paul Lester Adams (1894-1971) married Jane Anna (Jennie) Adams and had one child, Pauline Virginia Adams Button (1919-2000);
Fred Adams (1896-1978) married Jettie June Jobe and had one child, Mary Jane Adams Harvey (1920-2008);
Anna M. Adams (1899-1965) married Charles H. Kelly and had three children: Robert C. Kelly (1920-2007), Frank A. Kelly (1921-1996), and Patricia Anne Kelly Weinert (living).

Mary Adams died 17 Mar 1929 and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. Following is a letter written by Mary's daughter-in-law, Jettie Jobe Adams to her parents, a week after Mary's death [annotations added in square brackets by Bill Harvey]:

Sunday March 24, 1929

Dear Ones All. I hope you won't think I've neglected you this week, it seems we're past three years since I wrote yet it's only a week. Just a week ago tonight – about 10:45 dear old Mother Adams left us. She was gone when my letter was mailed but I thought it best to send it on and let you know she was sick and tell mama. She knew us all to the last, our voices yet I don't believe she saw us. She passed away so peacefully, she just finally breathed so softly like a baby. They had a trained nurse that night, she was such a help and consolation. The body was taken to the mortuary, and such wonderful care as they gave. The whole family was nearly frantic, I surely felt sorry for them, her arm was in such a fix so black at the last, the girls never saw it and I was glad. Minnie, Jennie and I managed to help the nurse. All the children and Jim were there except Bert, he came in Monday morning. We all went up to see her Monday night & they had her in a lovely room in bed just so natural one could almost imagine she was breathing. I never saw anything more beautiful than she was, the rooms softly lighted and flowers everywhere, one couldn't think of it as a funeral home. Then when we went Tuesday night, she was in the casket in another room, it was open & the most beautiful lining, I can't describe it, so many flowers everywhere. I felt so sorry for them, Bert, Paul & I felt we could stay all night if it wasn't for needing rest for Wed. Paul whispered to me he fancied he saw her eyelid flicker, she looked so natural. She was dressed in her black silk dress and lying in that soft fluffy white casket made it so beautiful. The services were Wed 11 a.m. Our Pastor had charge, he surely gave a beautiful talk and so consoling. There were so many beautiful flowers from friends & the family. Kellys wired flowers. The church sent a lovely bouquet. Beebe's sent the finest bunch, the whole family got a spray for the casket. The services were at the mortuary. It was better I think for the family than bringing her home. Jim [probably Jim Spears, Bert Adams's brother-in-law and a family friend] was with all of us thru it all, so many came and went Tuesday, I was so busy. I don't know what we would have done without Hugh [Jettie's Brother] he ran so many errands & helped so much besides the comfort to Fred. Grandpa A's sister [probably Mae Beaty] came from Sioux City Tues. morning, she went home Wed. night. We all went out to the cemetery Fri. afternoon, we got some of the flowers to press, I'll send you one.
Her going has certainly left a vacancy, Etta is keeping house for them, we have been there every evening this week and just came from there few minutes ago. Poor old Grandpa A. could neither eat nor sleep at first, I don't imagine he will be here many more years. Bert is still here, aims to leave this week, we will be lost when he and Hugh both leave.
Today was Minnie and Robert's birthday, poor old soul had said short time ago she wouldn't be here for their birthday, she must have felt she wouldn't be.
This was her obituary Hugh & Jim wrote:
"Mrs. Mary Adams was born in Van Buren County Iowa March 1, 1854, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Huff. In early life she accepted Christ and was baptized. She was united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony to Frank Adams Nov. 16, 1975. To this union was born nine children, five boys, and four girls, all of whom survive her except Gertrude, who passed away at the age of eight years. The family met in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary Nov 16, 1925. Hers was a life of self sacrifice and service, greatly beloved by all who knew her. On March 17, 1929 she passed on to her reward."
I'll not write more tonight. I should have written sooner but couldn't bring myself to do it. Love and kisses to all of you. Kiss Mama for me.

Lovingly, Jettie.

This headstone for Frank & Mary Adams was purchased by their son, Fred Adams, in the 1970's. This stone replaced a hand-carved marble stone, set in concrete, for Mary only.
